What To Do In Fremont, California

Located in Alameda County, the city of Fremont sits in the southeast part of the San Francisco Bay Area and primarily in the East Bay at the foot of Mission Peak. Often associated with Silicon Valley due to proximity, Fremont is the fourth most populous city in the Bay Area and the largest suburb. Along with its neighbors Union City and Newark, Fremont is part of the Tri-City Area. Fremont is home to just over 214,000 residents who are part of an ethnically diverse population. Fremont boasts both low unemployment and low crime levels. The population of Fremont is also young and active with a strong representation of families and children. Fremont has been ranked the second best city for overall health in addition to being ranked number 1 among the largest cities for offering a healthy environment in which to raise a family.

The first settlement in the area was called Mission San Jose. Built in 1797 by the Spanish, Mission San Jose was located on the routes connecting Los Angeles with San Francisco, the Bay Area and the Mission Pass to gold fields. John C Fremont mapped a trail through Mission Pass in the mid-1840s that provided access into the south-eastern Bay Area.

Mission Peak

The district became a hub for travelers although the mission went widely unused in the late 1840s. Eight towns were born around the mission and Washington Township was established in 1853. Five of the original township communities became what we now know as Fremont: Centerville, Niles, Warm Springs, Mission San Jose and Irvington.

Fremont, which was named after John C Fremont, was incorporated as a general law city in 1956. A master planned for development was approved shortly thereafter which laid the groundwork for the well planned community seen in Fremont today.

The late 1980s brought with it a high-tech boom which lasted through the late 1990’s. Rapid development in places like the Warm Springs District linked the city with Silicon Valley. In fact the Apple factory was located in Fremont and manufactured the very first Mac computer. By 1999, there were approximately 750 high tech companies in Fremont. Among these were some of the top 100 fastest growing public companies in the Bay Area and the top 50 companies in the East Bay.

A community rich in history and culture, Fremont combines city living with small town charm. The moderate climate, recreation areas, convenient transportation and moderate climate make Fremont the best in city living.
